HAVELOCK

Orality Detector

Orality refers to the characteristics of speech that distinguish it from writing—the patterns, rhythms, and structures that evolved for memory and performance before the advent of literacy. Drawing on the work of scholars like Walter Ong and Eric Havelock, this tool analyzes text for markers of oral tradition: formulaic expressions, repetition, sound patterns, direct engagement, and the agonistic tone of spoken debate. A higher score suggests text that carries the DNA of the spoken word.
